As a freshman for the Ohio State Buckeyes in 2003 Troy Smith played as a running back and kick returner but during his sophomore year he took over as quarterback and won four of the five games he started. In 2005 he completed 2 282 passing yards 16 touchdowns and four interceptions and by the end of the season he rushed for 611 yards and 11 touchdowns on 136 carries. By 2006 Smith was a finalist for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award (given to the top senior college quarterback) was voted the Most Valuable Player (by his fellow teammates) was awarded the Davey O?ÇÖBrien Award for best college quarterback and finally became the 2006 Heisman Memorial Trophy winner.
